Thankyou papa for your courage and your strength.  You make me smile all the time.  I’m so sad that you left me.  I hope your spirit is safe up in heaven.  I miss you so much. Love Ellie

Jake van der Pligt 9yrs:
To papa I thought you were the best grandpa and I really miss you. I liked it when we went down to the park and you kicked the football with me and you also taught me how to kick drop punts. I hope nanna can kick a football.  Love Jake

Holly van der Pligt 7yrs:
To Papa. I wish you were not gone. Now I can not have any coco pops. I think I can not take a week with out talking to you. I think you have a beautiful smile. It is so hard with out you. You always tell me the right thing to do. I do not think that I can play with nanna and not you too. Don’t get me started with all of the crying. You are a good grandpa. Good luck nana and the sisters.  Love Holly

Ruby Vanden Boom 6yrs:
Dear Papa.  I hope you’re good in heaven.  I wish you stayed in your life a bit longer.  I love you and I will always remember you.  Just as you will always remember me, well I hope so.  I hope you remember Inverloch and your beach house down there, including the 8 grandchildren.  You were so good at looking after all the 8 grandchildren in the water and everywhere.  I love you. Love Ruby.

Will Conabere 10yrs:
Dear God please keep my funny, caring and generous grandpa, Papa safe in heaven. Dear Papa I love you so much and I hope that you will remember all of the great times you had with me, the grandchildren and the whole family. You were an awesome grandpa and again I love you! Hi Jo

I have always admired your Dad mostly from afar - met him on 1 occasion at a birthday?? party at the Corralla's home in Power St Hawthorn and that time is still in my memmory.
Carmello and her mum and dad were exceptional neighbours to my parents and Des was extermelly loved by the Corolla's.

I have been a Hawthorn supporter/Member all my life and seeing Des play in my growing up days and then watch him coach his beloved Hawks made me admire him greatly.

I had no idea he was a sick man (I have just skimmed through your website - and will go back when I have more time)so my very late condolances to you and your family and am thrilled this is available for me to put words for your late dad.

All the very best Bruce Armstrong

My grandmother has asked me to pass on her condolences to you all. She worked for Des at the Box Hill Hospital and she has spoken so often about him that I almost felt I knew him myself.
Most recently Nana was telling me how Des loaned my father a suit so that he could attend the family court to fight for his children and at least be suitably dressed. He must have been a very kind and caring man and this website is a beautiful tribute. Nana is yet to trust the internet but I know she will love to see this wonderful tribute to Des, I'll make sure she sees it.
I believe Des and Nan visited my grandparents at their Toolangi property, they've now sold the property and live in Healesville.
Although it's been more than 25 years since my Grandmother worked for Des, she spoke often of him and always with the greatest regard and respect.
Our thoughts are with you all.

To the beautiful Nan, Jo, Lisa, Jane & Em,

Been thinking of you all lots lately, can only imagine the reality of your husbands/dads passing. Hope you are all getting the loving support you deserve. I'm sure you are...

I remember Des as a tough loving character. He was a man to look up to as a young fella growing up - hard working and loving to his family.

I imagine you all continuing to be an extremely strong family with Des's spirit driving you on.

Lots of love...

Dear Nan
I was so, so sad to hear of Des' passing from this world. He was a true champion and a gentleman. I have the fondest memories of you both back in the 70s at Hawthorn, so generous in both time and spirit.
I have heard of your beautiful girls; what a credit to both of you and what a comfort they will be now.
Hopefully you will soon see Des living on and growing in your family. I wish you strength and send you love as you find a new place for Des in your lives.

Nan,

Lorraine who is overseas in Shanghai (and was in Japan at the time) tried to send you this message yesterday when she first heard the sad news (using the email address [email protected] but it was returned).
Here is her message:

"Dear Nan,

I was stunned when I heard the news of Des's passing. Unfortunately none of us can choose a time. My heart goes out to you and your family. I could not make the service as I am in Shanghai at the moment however I am thinking of you and of the wonderful person Des was, and the number of people he has counselled, mentored and taught (especially in the pharmacy world) not only pharmacy, but humility and caring for others. I am sure he will be remembered by many people in this way.

Sincerely yours
Lorraine Woodworth"

Along with Lorraine I send my commisserations. Des will be sadly missed.
Our hearts go out to you and your family

Dear Nan and family, I do not wish you to reply to this note but I am moved to write this note following the service today.
You must have been extremely proud to witness the genuine respect and love for Des and your family displayed by all at Des's funeral today. Your girls and their suppport team (Husbands and kids)were magnificent and you all showed great strength and poise throughout the service. Jenny,Charlie and I are privileged to have Lisa and Marc and the kids as next door neighbours and Kate and her family value greatly their friendship with Jane and her family. You and Des must have great satisfaction in knowing the result of your parenting has produced a Gold Medal result. Please accept our deepest sympathy on Des's passing and we know the happy memories and your close knit family and friends will help you through the difficult times. If there is anything we can do don't hesitate to call.

Comment: Hi Nan and girls (and extended families),

When I think of Des I think of the fun times we had at the footy Club, the social events were our priorities.

Peter and Des shared so many milestones together. They both started their footy careers in 1966 at Hawthorn. Had their testimonials together. You were engaged a week before us, and we were married in a day of each other. We even had babies on the same night - visitors could see us both at the same time (we had rooms next to each other) what a hoot! Peter and Des had to get permission from the hospital to hold their babies for a photograph in "The Sun", how times have changed.

Thank goodness Des broke the trend and lived 34 years longer than Peter.

On a positive note he could see his children grow up, share many happy times with his grandchildren and many years with beautiful Nan. His passing is still too soon, he looked like he would be with us forever.

I feel for you Nan, I will always be there for you. Hopefully the beautiful memories you have of Des, your wonderful family, and many, many caring friends will give you strength in the months and years ahead.

Love Gwen x

I am very saddened by the death of Des . I feel a need to thank you (his family) for allowing Des to coach us and in particular the impact he had on my personal career.
He taught me about the importance of work rate and pushing the body to its limits. Preseason after preseason I followed Des around the streets of Burwood and Up and down the 500m 2nd hole of wattle Park. Each year We got closer and closer to him but very rarely did anyone beat him back to the university. He listened patiently to a frustrated kid wanting to play seniors then simply say you need to work harder and challenge me to be fitter .Des was also a chemist a Box Hill Hospital where my Dad was ill. It was sensational to have a coffee and talk about Hawthorn and his coaching style and share a laugh about the brutal runs he would lead us on in the middle of summer.
He was a great man.
I am sorry for you loss

Comment: Dear Nan

I wanted you to know that I only found out about Des today - so watching the '71 game on Saturday is hard to reconcile. As you know better than all, Des was his own man - with such a friendly smile. On one occasion at half time at Glenferrie, Kanga was giving us a real paste. As he took a breath, Des (in his usual seat at the end of the hot box in the dungeon)suddenly shouted 'bullshit'. With the sudden silence from all the other players,we waited for Kanga's response. It was both frightening and humourous. Des spoke his piece as usual and I still believe that Kanga was lost for words. i don't remember the result but I will always recall Des being himself. He has and will always remain an exceptional man in all facets of life. He was a wonderful role model to so many and always accepted every challenge with gusto and grit. A genuinely skilful person in sport and life. My thoughts remain with you and your children as well as my deepest wish that Des will again overcome adversity. I have such wonderful memories of both of you smiling and laughing in the times of football when friends were real and remain so today.

Again Nan, whatever it takes, your extended family will do - as we always have.

I Just wanted to pass on my thoughts to your family at this tough time. I understand what you are going through having lost my father last year. DES had a huge influence on me as a person and footballer and taught me so many valuable life lessons through my time when he was my coach..
I wish him all the very best in his recovery and am sure if anyone can overcome this then DES can..

May you find comfort and healing in knowing that Des was held in the highest esteem by his pharmacist colleagues. His readiness to go to great lengths to provide the latest information or an unusual drug was legendary.

My dear Nan

I always viewed Des as such a wonderful family man who also reached out in his own way to others. As with everyone else, I am totally numbed by this sad news. My genuine thoughts go out to you and I pray that you can muster the strength to go the distance with Des. He always greeted me with a smile and a handshake - a sign of his respect for those who knew him well. His life endeavours and achievements have been testimony to his desire to excel while contributing to the welfare of his mates and friends.

No words can explain how shocked I am Nan. I have not watched the '71 GF for some years, but I did on Sunday ! I can't explain the connection, but I can say what a great game and role Des played in us winning. His last quarter was exceptional and his spirit to play on regardless put others in the same frame of mind. His fierce desire to be a winner has not been lost. He has that spirit which so many haven't experienced.

My deepest thoughts go to you. Use your wonderful love of friends and family to help you muster strength when you feel down. You know and Des must also know that there is a wave of support for all of you and anything that needs to be done - will be done.

Love and sincere thoughts to you and the children and a very special prayer for Des.

My deepest sympathies go to Nan, Em & Lisa and the extended Meagher family on the untimely passing of Des. My thoughts go back to the late 60’s when David Parkin brought Des along to a Camberwell Baptist FC presentation night – first time the Bapts had had a true “left footer” within their walls !? And then to work with Des during his time at Hawthorn … many laughs and quite a few reds along the way. And then as “round the corner neighbours” at Inverloch. Oh, I will miss you Des, but you’ll never be far from my thoughts – every time I see that No. 30 brown and gold jumper. Lots of love Jen

Love to hear from you:
Hi Nan, Jo, Leece, Jane & Em,
really sorry to hear the news on the passing of Des. I run past your old house often and remember many happy times (though hope that that tennis court has been concreted over. I couldn't even win a set off Em and i think she was finishing primary school and i was starting uni.) Do think of you all often and wonder how you are all getting on. Thinking of you all and hope that there are peaceful times ahead soon. (In terms of my running, Des would be glad to know that I am still the 'slow loafer' that he affectionately (I think!)called me on more than one occasion!) When I kick the footy with my sons, I still can't 'kick over a jam jar' which I'm sure would please Des as that was once his accurate description!)He would perhaps be mortified that they barrack for Essendon and I'm not quite sure how that transpired. Hope you can find comfort in the coming days.
Take care, Phil, Ali, Toby, Emily & Sam Box

Oh Nan, What tragic news!!
You have only come into our lives in recent years, but what an impact you have made.
I remember Des trying to get me motivated to get fit and go for a "short" ride with him. His short ride was Inverloch to Leongatha with a big loop back! I used to tease him by saying that "you'll be sorry, I am very competitive", knowing full well that I was talking to one of the most driven, motivated men I had ever met!
I was looking forward to having Des help me with my re-hab after a new knee. Not going to happen now, but I know what Des would expect me to do. I think of him every step!
Our heart felt love goes to you and the family. Strength to you all.

Your Dad, was a wonderful man, direct, blunt and cheeky!I remember him saying to me "You could be a much better tennis player if you ran around the court some more!!". Standing in your kitchen, him towering over us and your beautiful mum giggling!! Such a happy home!! I heard the news on Friday and was wondering how to contact you, then i opened facebook this morning and Sam sent me an email with these contact details. Good Old Sam, she's a good girl!!

I'm sorry I won't be able to pay my respects at the funeral tomorrow, but I'm sure your Dad won't mind because i have just had a baby boy and I have been told he is a Hawthorn supporter. Mmmmmm we will see about that!!

I am so sorry for your loss.

I regret that it's been so many years since I've last spent time with Dessy and you all. But my memories of him are so fond. Days at Inverloch and family get togethers at Pam & Bob's are some of my most cherished growing up. And Des is a big part of the reason why I'm today such a proud Hawks supporter.

I live in Sydney now, and am trying to be there on Tuesday, but should I not make it, please know that my thoughts are with you, and I know that the whole family will be strong and go forward with the spirit and love and humour that Dessy so beautifully embodied throughout his life.

My daughters and I are saddened by this news.

We remember how Des and Sue worked so well together at Box Hill, and later at Donvale, where Des was so sensitive, supportive and sensible of her during her illness.

Des deserved a long and happy retirement. Reading the notes on the blog, it seems it was very happy, just cut cruelly short.

We are thinking of you and know that the days ahead will be difficult, and that your family and friends will be there to help you through.

Devastated to learn of this. Des and I roomed on a Victorian Amateur trip and played our first games for Hawthorn the same day. Remarkably, shining through the physical disaster is Des's special and unique humour - sharp, biting, and so funny. He is an original, and I treasure having had the pleasure to experience his company. I admire your bravery in compiling the blog, and will follow it and desperately hope to read more good news. Margaret joins in sending good wishes to you all.

Des , sorry to hear about your terrible misfortune. I always think of you when recalling my 2nd , (and total ) of games played for the Hawks . Kanga dragged me in favour of you just before half time of the game against South at Princes Park (1976) . He wanted a mud-runner on the field rather than a classy goal kicker I guess .
Now if you 're looking for some real music to inspire you on your road to recovery , and you will recover Des , go to my website and listen to the sampler of my CD "Golfs Greatest Hits " by the Great Grey Spark . If you like , and if one of your beautiful daughters could come back to me with an address , the full cd , and personally signed ( autographed ) (( unlike you Des, I only had a couple of opportunities to sign autographs back then )) by the Great Grey Spark will be on its way.
I didn't realise until I saw you just had your 67th that we played in the same team 35 years ago, with 14 years between us old man . You're still not too old to get over this though Des . Give it your best shot
