Watching my father for the very first time in his incapacitated state, at Monash Medical Emergency, was the most saddening site I have ever witnessed. Last week he was kicking a football in my backyard, pacing out the importance of figure 8 hand to ball drops! Now I was witnessing a person who lacked life and movement - his faced drooped with saddened eyes.
Dad had been airlifted from Wonthaggi hospital to Monash Medical for Neurological treatment after a severe haemoragic bleed to his brain. Multiple scans and assesments took place with the stroke affects becoming imminently evident. Dad was left with full right side paralysis to his body; inability to speak; no vision in right eye and the extent of damage to his brain not yet fully known.
Dignosis was grim as mum was abruptly questioned by doctor after first obs - what was her and dads view on resuscitation? Would she consider treatment for post events such as chest infections? The speed of information too fast for realities to set in - absorption by mum an impossible task.
Special Daughter Moment:
The doctors were concerned about dad dropping back into an unconscious state. At one point dad was not waking for anyone. The doctor started to shake him and bang his chest. I stood up and said "Dad, dad!" into his ear. He turned his head, opened his eyes, and smiled (half smile!). That's my dad!
A wonderful Irish Stroke Nurse was able to lift mums spirits.....the long road awaits....
